Shorty the giraffe loves to give kisses! Here he greets wildlife keeper Banki at Sarara Camp (@sararacamp) on the Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy in Northern Kenya. Shorty, or "Fupi" in Swahili, will go back to the wild once strong enough to survive on his own. He is a reticulated giraffe, which scientists have recently determined to be one of four distinct species of giraffe. Reticulated giraffe number about 8,000 individuals — as a separate species, it makes them some of the most endangered large mammals in the world as the population has dropped an estimated 70 percent in 15 years. Scientists wrangle a tranquilized giraffe to quickly attach a tiny, solar-powered satellite tracker to the ossicone (the horn-like structures atop the giraffe's head). The giraffe was not injured and is doing well. These GPS trackers will gain critical insight into reticulated giraffes’ preferred habitat, their home ranges, and more, in order to bolster long-term efforts to stop the "silent extinction" of giraffe. In early June, I followed a group from the San Diego Zoo Global (@sandiegozoo), the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (@giraffe_conservation) and the Northern Rangelands Trust (@nrt_kenya) as they worked to collar and tag 11 giraffe in the Loisaba (@loisaba_conservancy) and Leparua Conservancies in Northern Kenya.
